!EXPRESS! FLOWERS : Roses

ROSE-- Cherished as a symbol of love, roses were originally introduced to Europe from Southern Asia. Today the rose is produced commercially in hundreds of varieties, ranging greatly in size and color. Roses are available year round in all colors and many combinations, except blue. Hybrid tea roses are most commonly used commercially because of their long stems, perfect form and exceptional bloom size. Hybrid varieties are produced with one flower per stem that usually measures between 3-5 inches in diameter.

Care and Handling:

Place 4-8 inches of cool water in a clean bucket and add preservative according to the manufacture's instructions on the package. (Use warm water -at most 100 F -if the buds are tight , in order to promote more rapid opening.) A small amount of bleach will help to control bacterial buildup.
Cut the stems 1 to 2 inches under water by submerging your scissors or knife, making sure that all the leaves below the water line have been removed . These cuts should be slanted across the stem.
Thorns should be left on the stem, as the gashes caused by removing them are likely areas for bacterial infection, which can diminish the flower's longevity.
Remove the protective plastic or paper that covers the flowers.
Avoid overcrowding the bucket.
Keep the flowers away from sources of ethylene gas such as ripe fruits and decaying plant material. Sources of carbon monoxide must also be avoided.
With roses that look limp or bend at the neck, recut these flowers while they float in a large sink or tub. After the cutting allow them to float for approximately one hour.
Roses are especially sensitive to bacterial infection and should be maintained in fresh water. The water should be changed every day and the stems should be trimmed approximately 0.5 inch every two or three days to promote longevity.
Place roses in areas free of drafts, heat and direct sun.
