STATICE -- Most commonly used as a filler, statice is a cluster type flower with a paper-like texture. Statice is usually available in blue, purple, raspberry and white, and it has a long fin-like leaf that is attached along the entire length of each stem. Very commonly dried by hanging upside down, these flowers are often used with silks and within dried arrangements.
Care and Handling:
- Immediately check the bunches for moist, botritic areas within the flower clusters that are characterized by flowers falling off or shattering. Any infected stems should be removed and discarded.
- If the flowers are to be dried, immediately hang each stem upside down after inspection,
allowing approximately 7 to 14 days to fully dry.
- To prepare for floral arrangements, place 1.5-2 inches of cool water in a clean bucket and add preservative according to the manufacture's instructions on the package.
- Cut the stems 1inch and place in the solution, making sure that all the leaves below the water line have been removed by scraping the stem.
- Avoid overcrowding the bucket.
- After two days in the solution, place the flowers in clean water. This water should be changed every day and the stems should be trimmed approximately 0.5 inch every two or three days to promote longevity.
